The Capilano neighbourhood is located on the western and upper reaches on the District of North Vancouver with Grouse Mountain to the North, Upper Levels Highway to the south, Delbrook to the east and Capilano River to the west. This area offers residents all the urban conveniences of Vancouver and where they can enjoy peaceful mountain scenery and outstanding recreation nearby. The North Shore Mountains allow for easy access to snowboarding, skiing, hiking, site-seeing from Grouse Mountain or doing the Grouse Grind, or taking in the sites at the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. This park offers a unique blend of adventure, history and culture which makes it a must see. The bridge was built in 1889 and sways 70 meters above the Capilano River, spans 137 meters across and offers splendid views of the river below and the West Coast rainforest.
The Capilano Salmon Hatchery is located on the Capilano River in Capilano Regional River Park, here you will find many hiking trails and small local bridges where you can see salmon during spawning season jump and fight their way upstream. The Cleveland Dam is a short walk from the Hatchery and has some pretty awesome views of the dam. The dam was built in 1954 and supplies fresh drinking water to the Lower Mainland. Capilano Lake and the peaks of the Lions provides a stunning backdrop. Capitano-Pacific Trail runs 8 kilometres north from Ambleside Park to Capilano Lake.
Edgemont Village is a spot that invites you to park your car and walk. The pretty outdoor shopping village is nestled at the base of Grouse Mountain and is close to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. Edgemont Village was developed over the second half of the 20th century as a commercial and social hub with shops and services for the nearby neighbourhoods. Casper’s Pharmacy, the Mountaineer Cafe and Todd’s Dry Goods were the first three businesses to open the village in 1947 and by 1956, Edgemont Boulevard was well established as the local high street of Upper Capilano. Today, there are over 100 businesses and the majority are locally owned and operated.
