The City of North Vancouver is a waterfront municipality and separated from Vancouver by Burrard Inlet. Of the three municipalities on the North Shore, North Vancouver is the smallest, but the most urbanized with densely populated residential buildings and shopping areas. The North Shore is connected to Vancouver by two bridges, the Lion’s Gate Bridge and the Iron Workers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge and by the Seabus passenger ferry. The district of North Vancouver is bounded by Capilano River to the west, Indian Arm to the east and Burrard Inlet to the south and the beautiful Coast Mountains to the north.
Moodyville (now known as Moodyville Park) is the oldest settlement on Burrard Inlet, predating Vancouver, only New Westminster is the older non-native site in the region. Logging the rich stands of timber was a big industry and by 1860 a water powered saw mill was set up and by 1880 there were schools, post offices and a village. Arthur Heywood-Lonsdale and a relative named James Pemberton Fell, made numerous investments in the area and subsequently several locations in the North Vancouver area are named after Lonsdale and his family. By the early 1900’s with the North Vancouver ferries, the North Shore proved to be a popular area as streets, city blocks and houses were slowly built around the Lonsdale area.
The nearby mountains also proved to be a permanent attraction and ski areas were set up on Grouse Mountain, Mount Seymour and eventually Cypress Bowl. There are dozens of trails that weave through the forest, past waterfalls and lakes, following creeks and rivers and stunning views making the North Shore a hiker’s paradise.
