Hi this is Dana Ranahan from Body Works Sports Physiotherapy in North Vancouver and today I want to talk about carpal tunnel syndrome. So do you think that you have carpal tunnel syndrome or do you have numbness or pain into your hand? So the carpal tunnel is an area in the wrist, basically a tunnel where all the tendons and blood vessels and nerves travel down in the hand and typically it presents that you have numbness or pain in through your thumb, first, second and half of the fourth finger. So it’s a very specific presentation and the nerve comes down and travels right in the centre through here.

So what is a simple test you can do to see if you might have carpal tunnel is called a tinsel’s test, where you tap on the centre of the wrist kind of midway between each side of the wrist and you tap on it and see if that gives you any symptoms down into the hand. So if you’re getting those kind of symptoms, it would be indicative of carpal tunnel syndrome but often there’s other factors that could be at play. Sometimes there can be involvement of your neck. We can look at wrist weakness or tightness that might play a role. So certainly we can help you out with figuring out what you need to do to help manage those symptoms.
