Shoulder Pain and Frozen Shoulder

Hi, this is Dana Ranahan from Body Works Sports Physiotherapy in North Vancouver and we’re here today to talk about shoulder pain, and more specifically frozen shoulder.  So this can be a really tough condition to recover from and there can be a few different causes of frozen shoulder. Sometimes frozen shoulder comes on for no reason, people wake up one day and their arm becomes quite stiff and sore, shoulder becomes quite stiff and sore. Other times it can happen after an injury, so if you fall on your outstretched arm and you have a jam to your shoulder, then you lose mobility and effectively the shoulder joint is a very mobile joint.

So here’s a model of the bones. This is the shoulder blade and this is the humerus bone which is basically, it forms like a ball in a socket and you can see with all these bones how much mobility the shoulder has to allow us to move in front, to the side, to rotate through different motions and effectively with frozen shoulder what happens is the joint capsule around that whole ball area almost shrink wraps around the ball so that when it goes to move it doesn’t have as much mobility. So often what we’ll see is people come in with limited motion, they get a hiking of their shoulder up towards their neck, they can’t move for all the different motions of the shoulder get restricted. So what happens is all movements around the joint now don’t happen and sometimes it can be pain with it and sometimes it can be stiffness or different phases of those things both happen.
