Background
Steven grew up in Burnaby, BC, where at an early age he developed a love for physical activity. As a youth, he played various sports including baseball, tennis, swimming, track and cross country. He has recently gained an interest in squash and ultimate frisbee and hopes to complete his first triathlon next year.
Professional Training and Experience
Wanting to pursue a career that combined his love of physical activity and his desire to help others led Steven to complete a Master of Science in Physical Therapy at Western University. Prior to this, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (First Class with Distinction) at Simon Fraser University.
A keen student, Steven was involved in numerous opportunities to learn as much as he could in and out of the classroom. This included 5 years as an athletic trainer where he provided on-field injury management and taught rehabilitative exercises to athletes to help them return to play. Steven was a trainer for SFU’s NCAA Division II Football team, Field Lacrosse team and the Coquitlam Adanacs Jr. A Lacrosse team with whom he attended three national championships including their Minto Cup victory in 2016.
In his final year at SFU, Steven completed a Co-op work experience as a kinesiologist in a physiotherapy clinic on the North Shore. Here he developed a strong background in prescribing exercises to individuals of varying abilities – from school children to elite athletes. It was this experience that confirmed Steven’s desires to become a physiotherapist.
Physiotherapy Approach
As a physiotherapist, Steven draws from all his past experiences to provide you with a comprehensive, individualized rehabilitation program to assist you in returning to activity and achieving your goals. He listens attentively to get a clear background history of your injury and then performs a thorough whole body integrated assessment to get to the root cause of the problem. Afterwards, he will use hands-on treatments including manual therapy and soft tissue techniques to help you move better.
Steven is very passionate about empowering all his patients by educating them on their injury and providing them with exercises and strategies to manage their pain and improve their function. In doing so, he hopes to not only help you recover from your injury but also prevent other injuries from happening in the future.
Steven has a love for all things physiotherapy and a relentless desire to learn. He has completed his Level 1 Manual Therapy from the National Orthopaedic Division and a Mobilization with Movement – Lower Quadrant course. He reads clinically-relevant research articles frequently to stay up to date with the most current trends in physiotherapy and continues to engage in mentorship opportunities. Steven plans to pursue additional training in IMS/dry needling techniques, concussion management, and to complete the Manual Therapy levels from the National Orthopaedic Division.
